about
My uncle was just telling me about his 98-year-old mother who lives alone in a nursing home. Things are on lock down because of COVID, but she is occasionally allowed to entertain visitors, one at a time. The staff sets them up in an empty cafeteria with her and her visitor separated by several tables. Kind of sounds like a prison visit.
2020 has been a year of isolation and disconnection for many of us, but folks living in long-term care facilities have probably felt it the most. It seems like a fitting time to release Ben Grace's thoughtful reimagining of my song "Gloria." I hope it is a comfort to those who are missing their loved ones in this season.
It's also a fitting time because we're just a couple days away from the first Sunday of Advent. In this season when we remember Mary and Joseph, Simeon and Anna, and ransom captive Israel waiting for their longed for messiah, we join them in waiting. For relief from suffering and death. For hope of life and flourishing. For the Light of the world to dwell amongst us once again. Like Gloria, we're waiting for a visitor to come.
I'm deeply grateful to Ben for all the hard work and heart he put into this remix. It has helped me to hear this song afresh and, as a songwriter, this is a great gift. I hope you enjoy it, too.
lyrics
V1:
Gloria
in a nursing home
she was born in June of 1922
From a Catholic home
in the south of Texas
to some memory care just far enough away
C:
Where she sits by the door
for her loved one to come
and she can’t think of anything else
but it’s been three long days
and she’s hardly had a thing to eat
but she’s waiting for a visitor to come
V2:
Gloria
in the dining room
hears “amazing grace” and grabs the singer’s hand
knows her favorite saints
and all her favorite music
so she’ll stay a while then wander down the hall
C:
B:
Gloria…
Gloria…
V3:
Gloria
in my troubled heart
with her oil in hand she consecrates the sick
