about
I wrote this one with my friend Aryn Michelle and she originally released a poppy, upbeat version of it in 2022. That track has over 100,000 plays on Spotify, which is good for an indie artist. I'm thankful to have been a part of writing it.
More recently we recorded an acoustic version of the song and decided to make it a duet. It's a totally different vibe than the original version and I think it fits the lyrics a bit better. The song was inspired by Moses's life - specifically the time when Moses had to go into exile after killing a man. In the song he's tending his father-in-law's sheep and trying to figure out what is next. Life didn't go the way he thought it would and he's lost. It's in this place of shame and failure that he starts to hear God's voice, speaking to him from a burning bush.
When I sing this song I think of a time when I left a community that had meant a lot to me. It was a hard decision to leave and it hurt people I love. Leavings are hard and that year felt a bit like tending sheep in Midian. But God was still shepherding me through that in between and, in time, showed me what was next.
Maybe you're in the interim. If so, I hope this song is a comfort.
